Safeguarding

Dear Parent/Guardian

I am writing with some very important information.

SAFEGUARDING

Safety is of paramount importance at St Ambrose Barlow and you will have noticed that over the Easter holidays we have had electric gates installed at both the main entrance and the music block entrance further up Shaftesbury Road.

The gates will be closed from 8.40 a.m. every day. If your child is late for school, they must enter by the main gates where reception staff will open the pedestrian entry gate. If you need to visit school during the day, please use the buzzer to gain entry.

PUNCTUALITY

As you know, before Easter we operated a ‘same day’ detention for pupils arriving late for school. This worked extremely well with hardly any instances of lateness in the week prior to Easter. However, we have now returned to school and lateness is again deteriorating.

May I remind parents that pupils MUST be on the premises when the bell rings at 8.45 a.m. otherwise they will be marked late.

Late detention rota will return to normal for the time being (e.g. if pupils are late twice in one week, they will receive a detention the following Thursday). However, we will monitor the situation and if necessary, re-instigate same day detention should punctuality deteriorate further.

Parents were very supportive of our efforts to halt late arrival to school and I would like to thank you for your continued support of the school’s effort to improve punctuality.

E-MAIL
We are constantly trying to improve our communication with parents and have recently sent e-mails to parents to advise them of Parents Evenings. If you have an e-mail address and would like the school to contact you by this method, please let the office staff know your e-mail address. Yours faithfully

Curriculum Evening 29/04/2010

jl/jd09/10

19 April 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians

May I invite Year 9 parents to an Upper School Curriculum Evening on Thursday, 29 April 2010 at 7.15 pm.

At the Curriculum Evening there will be various departmental displays and members of staff will be available to answer your questions.  You will also be given a detailed Options Booklet which can be studied further at home.  This is a perfect opportunity to seek guidance in helping your child choose their options for the next two years and to be made aware of the demands which upper school courses bring.

This evening will be directed solely at parents due to shortage of space and we ask that only parents/guardians attend.  Pupils have already received the presentations in assembly with ongoing discussions about their Options.

Please complete the tear-off slip below and return this to school by Friday, 23 April 2010.

We must stress, it is particularly important for you to attend.

Yours sincerely

Mr J Lawford

Deputy Head Teacher

Creative Media Enhancement Course

For several months the pupils on the imedia group with Mr. Platt have been working on a project to outline their coursework for an exhibition in The Lowry Centre entitled "Salford, I am here!" The projects involved have been diverse. From Mitchell Slevin's design of a modernistic tower block in Google sketchup to Connor Scott's Scrabble board animation. The school radio station was used to record the audio tracks where the pupils talk about their inspiration for the coursework they are undertaking. The final work will be presented as a booklet and a video format at the Lowry centre. Details on the dates of the exhibition will follow later, check back for updates.

Welcome to the New Website

The IT department have been working hard to revamp the website. The pages you are now seeing are created using an open source package called Joomla. This has been refined for school use by the members of an internet forum at www.edugeek.net Joomla allows content to be modified live on the website which will allow staff to login and create there own content "as it happens" rather than handing it to a web guru and waiting for it to be posted. This will allow a more flexible and creative space for members of the St. Ambrose Community to keep in touch with current events.
